With Spore's just released patch 5, you can export creatures (and buildings and vehicles) from Spore into Maya (or any other 3D application that supports the Collada format). All thanks to the brilliant Dan Moskowitz.
The exported creations include normal, diffuse and specular maps, and are fully rigged and weighted. So you can pose them too.
So now everybody (not just me!) can take their creations into Max or Maya, and render them like this or this.
update: buildings and vehicles are going to have to wait, for now it's only creatures

I can't wait to see what you do with it! Post links in the comments.
update: Instructions for how to export your creatures as Collada files, then import them to Maya are in this post here.

I knew this feature would eventually be included, so I set up a google alert just in case. Finally, it payed off! This is going to have a huge impact on the indy game scene. Kudos to the spore team!
ReplyDeleteAre there any licensing restrictions associated with exported models? Can we use them in commercial game/film projects?
ReplyDeleteYes, there are licensing restrictions on the exported models, as per the EULA.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm not a lawyer and haven't actually looked at it, so I can't give you any substantive info on it.
I'll give it a try soon, thanks so much to you guys for working on Spore and the exporter!
ReplyDeleteI might also try and post the EULA up when i get around to it.

I think this is the right link to the EULA:

It looks extremely restrictive - you can't use the assets for ANYthing, it sounds like to me. If that's true it's a real shame, EA has the opportunity with this to really turn its image around for a lot of people.
It's the standard EA tools EULA, used in other games such as SimCity. A copy of it can be found here http://simcitysocieties.ea.com/eula.php
ReplyDeleteHad problems with the importer at first but everything is fine. FYI Maya will try to use the FBX importer if you allow it to do a 'best guess' in the dialog box. Make sure to choose 'Collada Importer'as import type otherwise you'll only get the skeleton.
ReplyDeletePhotoshop Extended will also import the creatures. It worked it CS3.
Here are a few I tried in Maya with MR. http://tinyurl.com/m7b9ws
Thanks for the info, I'm sure that will come in handy.
ReplyDeleteReally nice renders! Thanks for sharing them!
O.
Wow that is just cool!! Anyway I think Spore is awesome the game lets you travel the galaxy. There are over 500,000 unique planets to explore! That's just unbelievable! Also you can create any type of creature and all the creatures you run into are from other players. No other game can claim this.. The best part of this game is the space phase, you could spend a lifetime exploring all the planets and meeting new creatures.. This game is limitless, there is no other game that comes close to this one.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, if you have time, take a visit to my Download Games website.
Is it possible to export the creatures from Spore: Creature Creator? Or is it just Spore?
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Just Spore, not the creature creator standalone. Sorry!
